Making the Most of Your Space

The Maids • May 25, 2013

When it comes to storage, it seems like there's never enough, and clutter makes house cleaning much harder. To keep your house neat and clean in the absence of extra space, the best thing you can do is find ways to maximize the space you have. There are many ways to do this, but here are three things to get you started:

Use Vertical Space

This is a One Minute Tip from Apartment Therapy, and a good one! Using a variety of shelves can grow your storage by leaps and bounds. To try:

  • Undershelf baskets that attach underneath a shelf to make use of the space between shelves that is otherwise wasted.
  • Free standing shelves are mini-shelves you can put on top of a larger shelf set to separate items and create more organization in a small space.
  • Wall shelves are the classic way to turn your walls into storage, and are especially great for showcasing things you love!

Basket Systems

Baskets have been a stylish way to store things for years, and there's a reason for their sustained popularity: they are great at what they do.

The unique advantage to using baskets is the ability to store things in a way that looks neat and beautiful but is also versatile and easy to change. Moving your crafting project from the living room to the kitchen? No problem, grab the basket!

Look around your house for places where the things you own are just gathered together haphazardly and see if there's room for a basket there. For instance, if your laundry detergent, fabric softener, and dryer sheets are sitting on a shelf, consider putting them and all of your laundry needs in one basket. It will instantly look less cluttered.

Multitasking Furniture

One of the easiest ways to get more storage is to buy or repurpose furniture into multitaskers that both store and serve as functional pieces. Here are some examples of great multipurpose pieces:

  • Ottomans that open to reveal storage in the middle.
  • Beds that have drawers attached underneath.
  • Chests used as coffee tables or window seats.

There are a lot of great opportunities to maximize your space and save yourself from clutter!
